Amana Takaful Cares - Projects Completed

Donation to NHSL Accident and Orthopaedic Service, Colombo

A donation was made to the Accident and Orthopaedic Service of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo with the participation of the Deputy Director of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Accident and Orthopaedic Service, Dr. Prasad Ariyawansa.

The Accident and Orthopaedic Service of the National Hospital treats approximately 300 patients daily as out door patients and another 100 to 120 patients are admitted to wards as in-patients. Nearly 25 percent of out patients are admitted and treated for road traffic accident related injuries and this is the single most cause for admission for this trauma unit. According to a recent World Bank report Sri Lanka spends nearly 15 billion rupees annually on medical treatment.

 

Gampola children’s park refurbished

Amana Takaful identified that the children’s play ground in Gampola town was neglected and in a dilapidated state. Steps were taken to speak to the local government authorities and local work force to reinstate the play ground and toilet facilities to what it was once before. Many parents together with their children from nearby Montessori’s participated in the opening ceremony.

Amana Takaful Insurance Donation to Cancer hospital

When informed that there were no enveloped to distribute medicine for cancer patients at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital immediate steps were taken to make sure that this shortage never occurs in the future. The Shari’ah Council of Amana Takaful donated stationery to fulfill this simple but dire need.

 

Amana Takaful Insurance celebrates 10 years by helping hospitals

Amana Takaful Insurance, Sri Lanka’s pioneer in the Takaful way of insurance, recently completed several projects in hospitals in the island to coincide with ten years of operations.   

Under this initiative several hospitals were provided with equipment while others involved minor construction work. The hospitals involved in this project were the hospitals in Karapitiya,  Eravur, Puttalam and Matale.

The dental unit of Karapitiya Hospital in Galle was in much need of a Light Curing Unit to carry out certain operations. The equipment was handed over to Dr. Priyanee Senadheera, Director Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya, Galle. In Eravur, the maternity Ward was in dire need of curtains and separators to provide the require privacy for mothers during delivery. In Puttalam, the lack of seating facility at the OPD section for patients was rectified by providing several multiple-seaters for the ward. In Matale, the children’s play ground adjacent to the Children’s Ward was in a dilapidated state and need much refurbishment work. Funds and man power was provided for the completion of the project so that the children at the hospital could enjoy their stay.

Mr Ehsan Zaheed, Director and CEO of Amana Takaful Insurance quoted, “we decided to mark this special milestone as the country’s pioneer in Takaful operator and having achieved a Billion rupees of GWP last year, by serving the community with the funds that may have otherwise been spent on celebrations. Many of our long standing customers of the past 10 years supported this view as they felt it was very apt that we do such a service”.

“We specially chose hospitals that that were rural or in the outstations as they are often have unmet needs unlike hospitals in Colombo which have the attention of most donors and companies in their social activities” Aashiq Aminuddin, Manager Marketing of Amana Takaful stated.

Children and health have always been something Amana Takaful has focused on as key future investments of a country.  In the past, several small scale projects have been done in hospitals such as the Lady Ridgeway children’s Hospital.

Amana Takaful has 17 branches across the island offering both General and life Takaful services and also has a fully fledged operation in the Maldives.

Amana Takaful Insurance offers special cover for the hearing impaired

Amana Takaful Insurance recently offered a special cover for the hearing impaired at the Southern Region Deaf Association with the view of taking the value of life insurance to them. The association has a large membership of nearly 1500 that is involved in industries such as textile, carpentry, electric and wiring work and bathik.

“As the president of this association I am very pleased that Amana Takaful Insurance came forward to provide a life cover for our members for the first time in Sri Lanka., said H.K.P. Pemaratne, President, Southern Province Deaf Association, commenting on the special insurance scheme offered to them.

“We are pleased to be working with the SRDA. This has given us an opportunity to realise their aspirations and be able to help them secure them. We hope to work closely with the association in the future as well. ”, said Gayan Caldera, Assistant Sales Manager for the Southern Region.

The new partnership saw three ambitious projects taking wing with the focus on environment and children’s health.

Green Life 360 – A new dimension to conservation

The battle of the green began in 2006 by the Interact District and together with Amana Takaful Insurance they continued to take down pollution through ‘Green Life 360’ in the year 2007/ 08. All the gears and targets were set to hit cities such as Colombo and Galle, as members of the Interact District 3220 along side with ATI began their mission of supporting reforestation and educating the public of the importance in preserving the environment. The project covered recycling plastic materials, to cleaning up a polluted coastline in Colombo, arming the civilians through a reforestation campaign in Galle and a ‘workshop for a greener tomorrow’.

Project Sunshine

“Project Sunshine” was another initiative launched to provide some comfort to the young patients of the Accident Ward at Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Borella by repainting the walls colourfully with child friendly drawings. The project was well received with thanks by the state authorities who appreciated the effort to bring comfort to the only Accident Ward in the country solely dedicated to children.

Vision Camp 2008

Identifying and resolving to combat an impending crisis that would greatly affect Sri Lanka in 2015, Interact District 3220 and ATI, teamed with Rotary District 3220 and held camps in strategic locations to educate the citizens to fight ignorance over avoidable child blindness through ‘Vision Camp 2008’. The three month mission, a project aimed to ‘envision a brighter future for youth’, saw over 1,100 children having their vision checked and visual aids provided. The team also held camps within the Galle and Kalutara districts, where the team educated the public on the impact of avoidable child blindness and the simple ways of detection and correction.
